Fall 2009 Newsletter

Fall is a great time to start a new needlepoint project! Sooooo...we have a wonderful group of trunk shows running now through September! Susan Roberts has colorful tallis bags, children's, Christmas, etc. (now through Sept. 5). Whimsy and Grace has a gorgeous floral selection in bags, coasters, hat bands, belts, eyeglass cases, and more (now through Sept. 22). HP Designs arrives Aug. 21 with a special collection of canvases and lacquer boxes. Danji Designs is sending the bright and colorful Laurel Surch cats collection towards the end of the month. Finally, Labors of Love (a new designer) is including their very popular bird ornaments in their show. These birds are modeled after the clip-on glass Christmas ornaments, are very colorful, and include tail feathers and a clip. You're invited to come on in and take a look at the hundreds of canvases we've brought in for your stitching pleasure!

Fall is also a good time to treat yourself to a class here at NSN. How about some new stitches, techniques or threads to try out? Or a spooky haunted house? Our Fall class list is included in the events section of the website. Did you know that we also do lots of individual classes? You can learn the stitches of your choice, get suggestions for threads and stitches for a canvas, or learn a technique (perhaps how to use a laying tool or overdyed threads). These classes are scheduled at your convenience and are S20/hour.

As you can see, our new website is up and running! Here, you will find a huge selection of canvases, threads, a calendar of classes and events, a map, etc. You can sign up for our newsletter on the site or you can call the shop. We want to 'go qreen' and save trees and $$$ as well. We will be doing the bulk of our communication via email now. We promise to keep most emails brief and not to flood you with them either.

Holiday finishing deadlines: Oct. 1 for our talented out-of-town finisher and Nov. 28 for our most-basic local finisher (great stockings and pillows!).

Finally, we are sad that Linda and her family are moving to Florida. Who could live without our lovely Chicago winters? We shall definitely miss our cheerful, in-house robo-stitcher and her son Zachary, who has patiently helped with all things computer in the last couple of years. They leave Aug. 25, so please stop in (Sats.) or call and say goodbye before then.

A very happy Fall to all!
Carol and Jake

Best of Market

Every year I make a beeline for the Shorebird Studio booth. Jake wondered why we just had to begin there. When he saw Katy’s new limited edition pieces for this year, he knew why. One of them has a production of just 10 pieces (the foo dog #M515) because that’s how many foo dog faces she can cut from the one obi panel. The rhododendron (M516) has a limit of 14 pieces for the same reason.(It looks kind of squished in the picture so that the obi panels can be seen on the sides.) I requested both of these on 18 mesh and each is $345. They are absolutely spectacular. You can view them at www.shorebirdstudio.com. Go to New in 2009. Even though the page is labeled 2008, the canvases on both pages are new this year. I’m not sure if they are sold out yet, but first come… Another wonderful find was a group of leather bags in varying sizes, fashion colors, and sizes from Stirling Leather. Quality is excellent, prices are reasonable, and a variety of canvases have been painted for them by different designers. The stitched canvas fits into the front opening—finish it yourself or we will do this for you! More fans and kimonos are on their way from Danji, plus a gorgeous piece of the Holy City done in whites and creams. If you have been around for a while, like me, and think these look familiar—they are! Jinice did these line-drawn canvases a while back and Danji bought the rights to the line a year ago. More will be coming out as the year(s?) go on. Linda’s dramatic fan on black was one of the first last year.

For those of you who do lots of ornaments each year, this is our thank you! Let us finish 12 ornaments for you in 2009 and the 13th is free! Can’t get any better than that!

And last, but certainly not least, a big thank you!! for shopping with us! We always appreciate your business and look forward to seeing you.

News Blurbs

This year we will be using brief news blurbs via email to let you know about new canvases, classes, threads, tools, etc. that arrive at NSN. We just returned from Winter Market in San Diego where we ordered hundreds of exciting new canvases. And since I can hardly remember them after those very busy 3 days, I can keep you updated as they arrive via email. This sure lowers the cost of communication, and makes it easier too! If you would like to receive emails, please give us your email address when you call or visit the shop.

Already this year we have added the new Silk Lame` Braid 13 for that size canvas in 15 popular colors. The very popular Silk Lame` Braid 18 has 14 new colors that arrived just after Market. Also brand new to NSN are Kreinik’s 3/8” Trim Braid in 14 colors. It’s flexible and couches easily. Add drama to your canvases with the vibrant colors and change in texture!
